Who is the Mohua Marine Trust?

Mohua Marine Trust is a group of mostly Golden Bay residents whose awareness of

the local marine and coastal areas raised a flag of concern. The Trust was
formed in late 2021 to focus attention on these delicate environments.

What Prompted the Formation of the Trust?

The biodiversity and population of many of the characteristic species for this region have declined over recent decades. This has been most noticeable in the steadily declining and degrading of Mohua / Golden Bay's habitat that has impacted on the marine ecosystem. That has had negative flow on effect environmentally, customary, recreationally and economically.

What Are Our Goals?

We want to actively engage in promotion of the ecological health of our marine environment to the wider community. And in practical terms, to initiate and create projects that provide enhancement of the biological communities that support healthy stocks of marine species, from the smallest invertebrates to the largest fish and marine mammals.

An approach that we are initially focusing on is the building and placement of artificial reef structures to provide the physical habitat for the organisms that support these diverse communities.

Who Do We Want to Work With?

Anyone who shares our interests, passions and concerns for our marine environment is welcome to join us!

We want to work closely with

  • Manawhenua Ki Mohua

  • The Department Of Conservation

  • The Marine Farmers Association

  • Students of Collingwood Area School and Golden Bay High School

  • The Tarakohe Sea Anglers' Club

  • Other organisations (National and Local) who are dedicated to marine habitat restoration

How Are We Funded?

At this stage we are building a funding base. Initial funding is starting to flow and we continue to approach a range of funding agencies, community providers of public good activities, private benefactors and philanthropists.

We may qualify for specific funding from local community trusts.

We welcome all support, financial or in kind.
