GETTING STARTED

There is so much to work on in the coastal and marine environments in this beautiful Mohua Golden Bay area. It’s been time-consuming working out the first steps, but we are now getting clarity on a few priorities as the focus and planning heads toward two initial projects – the Onekaka Wharf project and the development of Reefball technology that may be applicable throughout Aotearoa New Zealand (link through).

We see these projects as being of immediate benefit to the local marine environment, and to help restore what we have already lost. There will be valuable flow-on effects to both the environment and to customary and recreational fishers through fish recruitment from innovative reef designs and habitat creation.

Onekaka Wharf

The Onekaka Wharf, in particular, provides a valuable habitat where the community can engage and be involved in. The resulting increase in biodiversity and access via a snorkel trail will help to draw in school groups and other interest groups, and to increase awareness of our goals.
